Description

The Holy Unmercenaries (anargyroi in Greek) were physicians who healed the Faithful by their prayers and intercessions in their life and afterwards over many generations.   They didn’t accept any money for their services, but were “without silver,” which is what “anagyroi” means.  These healers still help us when we call upon them for healing of soul and body.  They literally fulfilled the commandment of Christ to His Disciples, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

The names of these twenty Holy Unmercenaries depicted in this icon are: Cosmas and Damian of Arabia, Cyrus and John, Sampson and Diomedes, Hermolaus and Panteleimon, Mocius and Anicetus, Cosmas and Damian of Mesopotamia, Julianos, Anthimos, Leontios, Cosmas and Damian of Rome, Eutropios, Thallaleos, and Tryphon.  They are often shown carrying either medicine boxes or a vial in one hand, and a spoon for dispensing their medicine in the other, but sometimes with just a Gospel.  May we ardently pray to them for our spiritual and bodily healing!
