Description

Saint Salome was married to Zebedee, the fisherman, and was the mother of the Holy Apostles James and John, the Sons of Thunder.  Saint Joseph, the Betrothed, who was the guardian of the Virgin Mary Theotokos, was her father.  She faithfully served the Lord Jesus Christ in His ministry when he preached and traveled in Israel, right up until the time of His Passion, Crucifixion, Death, and Burial.

Early in the morning of the third day after Christ gave His Life for the world, Saint Salome came with the other Myrrh-Bearing Women to the grave to anoint the Lord Whom she loved.  In this icon she is shown holding a flask of sweet myrrh oil for that anointing.  The Holy Myrrh-Bearers met an angel at the tomb dressed in white who told them that the Lord had risen from the dead and would go before the Apostles into Galilee, where they would see Him.  The angel told the Myrrh-Bearers to tell the Apostles what they saw and heard, which they did immediately, but the Apostles didn’t believe them until they saw the Lord Himself later that day.  This contemporary icon is from Patmos, Greece.
