The Holy Archangel Raphael is one of the seven great Archangels whom the Holy Fathers of the Church believe are of the highest, or Seraphic Order of the Bodiless Hosts, or Seraphim, who stand closest to the Throne of God. The names of these are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Salatiel, Jegudiel, and Barachiel. Sometimes one more name is added, that of Jeremiel.
Saint Raphael’s name in Hebrew means “It is God Who heals.”  He is known for healing and for protecting travelers , and he is mentioned in the book of Tobit from the 3rd century b.c. Septuagint translation of the Old Testament into Greek that Jesus quoted from. In the prayers for healing with oil from the service of Holy Unction for those with illnesses of soul and body, Saint Raphael is invoked as one, who by his prayers and intercessions, God often imparts healing to the Faithful for their physical needs, and always gives healing for our souls. Known by the generic name of angels, or messengers, all of the Heavenly Hosts communicate with the very Throne of God, as they bring our prayers and supplications to Him from us. O Holy Archangel Raphael, pray unto God for us!
