Description

This 16th century icon is a part of a celebrated set of festal icons showing important events in the life of Jesus plus a few other renowned feasts of the year.  It was painted by George the Cretan for the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos, and together they are known to be great examples of Post-Byzantine Greek iconographic art.  This icon is the tenth of that set of icons.

The Resurrection is the revelation of the beginning of the world which is entirely renewed for all who wish to participate in this profound renewal.  A new time has come, and the permanent and everlasting Eighth Day of the new Creation is upon us.  The cycle of the first seven days of Creation has been completed, including God resting in the tomb on the Sabbath Day, but now the fullness of revelation and the Age to Come is here present.  We are all invited to enter this sacred door of Life, through the Holy Cross of His and our crucifixion, and by willingly laying down our life also in obedience and love to God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  All of Creation, those living and those dead, are present and welcome.  It is up to us to either proceed or turn back.  Let us go in!
